ShelterSquare Foundation (SSF) is a Section 8 non-profit organization raised in 2023, with the support of Aajeevika Bureau Trust (AB) in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. SSF’s founding directors include experts in urban housing from practice, policy, research, finance and technology sectors. In light of the context of persistent inadequacy in housing conditions in urban India, especially with respect to migrant and low-income workers in our cities, SSF’s mission is to promote equitable and dignified housing for workers, particularly those engaged in the unorganized and informal sectors by developing appropriate, demand-driven and value-added housing solutions. We aim to enable housing pathways for different stages of their life-cycle, in the real-estate markets of our cities, through a non-profit yet self-sustaining model. SSF is thus aiming to balance its agenda in a way that generates “non-profit” benefits in a “for-profit” environment, essentially emerging as a self-sustaining “limited-profit” model of housing provision—one that is high-quality, purposefully and sensitively managed and scalable.
