Mohandas Gandhi, also known as Father of the nation in India, was a great freedom fighter in India. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, a coastal town in Kathiawar, India. His father, Karamchand Uttamchand Gandhi, was the diwan (chief minister) of Porbandar State. His mother, Putlibai, was Karamchand’s fourth wife. Gandhiji had two elder brothers and one sister.

Gandhiji received his primary education in Porbandar. In 1887, he went to London to study law. He returned to India in 1891 after passing the bar exam. Gandhiji began his legal practice in Rajkot, but soon moved to South Africa to work as a lawyer for an Indian Muslim merchant.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi to Bapu: a story every Indian knows.

Gandhiji witnessed the discrimination and oppression faced by Indians in South Africa firsthand. This experience inspired him to devote his life to fighting for justice and equality. In 1894, he founded the Natal Indian Congress to protect the rights of Indians in South Africa.

Gandhiji developed the philosophy of Satyagraha, or nonviolent civil disobedience while living in South Africa. Satyagraha is based on the principles of truth, nonviolence, and self-sacrifice. Gandhiji used Satyagraha to lead successful campaigns against discriminatory laws and practices in South Africa.

In 1915, Gandhiji returned to India and joined the Indian independence movement. He led several mass movements against British rule, including the Non-Cooperation Movement (1921-22) and the Quit India Movement (1942). Gandhiji’s nonviolent methods of protest inspired millions of Indians and helped to bring about India’s independence in 1947.
